These days I’m caught in a conflict—feeling both love and loathing at the same time.
Like having a father who’s an addict—you love him because he’s your father, but you also resent him because of the addiction.
That’s how my relationship with Afghanistan has become.
On one hand, I love it because it’s my homeland; on the other hand, I resent it, because right now, there’s nothing to be proud of. However I look at it, compared to other countries, we seem scattered and humiliated.
I call my mother. In the middle of our conversation, she says:
“My child, when a person finds peace, that’s when they feel pain.
Focus on yourself, your home, your life, your wife and children. For the love of your mother, I know how to take care of myself. This new year, I wish you strength, good times, and a good name.”
Spring has come. The snow has melted. I’ve emerged from my cave. Let’s see what I can do.
